How to Relieve Hemorrhoids Using a Poultice

How to Relieve Hemorrhoids Using a Poultice

Hemmorhoids cause discomfort for even the simple task of sitting. Old folk remedies for this condition are varied. One remedy that does provide relief and eventually cures the condition is an herbal poultice.

Things You'll Need:

Mortar and pestle

Clean fabric

Water

Hot water bottle

Elderberry

Mullein

1

Cleanse the area with water and soap. Cleanse again with alcohol. Allow it to dry.

2

Place the elderberries and mullein in a mortar and pestle and grind into a powder or, if the berries are fresh, into a mush. Make sure the mullein is ground and formed into a powder before adding the berries. Add a small amount of warm water until a paste is formed.

3

Spread out a piece of fabric (linen, muslin, gauze or white cotton fabric) on a clean table and spread the paste formed onto the material in an area large enough to be placed over the affected area.

4

Place the fabric on the hemorrhoids and tie the poultice in place. Apply a hot water bottle to keep the area warm. As the poultice works to heal the area, there will be a throbbing sensation. Once the throbbing begins to subside, replace the poultice and continue application until the throbbing disappears. This throbbing indicates that the poultice is drawing out toxins and infection.

Tips & Warnings

These herbs can be used together or separately. When using mullein the mixture should be 4 parts mullein to 1 part hot apple cider vinegar to 1 part water.

How to Relieve Gas Pains

How to Relieve Gas Pains

Gas pains can range from mild to severe. Symptoms such as bloating, belching, stomach cramps or sharp pains can be very uncomfortable and down right embarrassing. Learn how to relieve gas pains with the quick and easy steps below.

Things You'll Need:

Antacids

Peppermint tea

Chamomile tea

1

Antacids have calcium carbonate, which helps relieve sour stomach, acid indigestion and heartburn. Take the proper amount of antacids as directed on the label. Some antacids do not need to be taken with additional liquids, such as water or juice.

2

Drink peppermint tea. Warm peppermint tea is known for soothing an upset stomach. It relaxes the stomach muscles and sooths the lining of the colon. Feel free to add a little sugar to your tea for the taste. Chamomile tea is also known to sooth gas pains.

3

Try mild physical exercise to relieve gas pains like walking or cycling. You can also relieve gas pains by physically stretching your body.

4

Try to belch. If you have swallowed too much air and gas has formed, belch it up. This will help you feel better instantly.

Tips & Warnings

Do not hold in your gas. Excuse yourself and let it out. Holding in gas causes more pain. It is extremely uncomfortable.

Try not to let excess air go down your throat when you are chewing gum, eating or drinking.

Eat slowly and do not gulp down meals!

If your newborn baby has gas (also known as colic), try gripe water. Gripe water can be brought over-the-counter.

Stay away from people when you are gassy and you can't control it. You will definitely offend people!

The following foods are known to produce gas: baked beans and dry beans like soy and lima, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, collard greens, deep fried foods, cheese, milk, ice cream, heavy cream sauce, fatty foods, raisins and bananas.

Do not smoke if you have gas pains. This will make it worse. Smoking causes you to swallow air.

If you develop gas that is caused by a prescription medication, ask your doctor before taking an over-the-counter remedy. Mixing medications can be very dangerous.

If you continue to have a problem, visit your doctor. Your gas could be linked to Irritable Bowel Syndrome, also known as IBS. Or you may be lactose intolerant. Your doctor will be able to perform a test that measures your body's ability to absorb lactose.

How to Relieve Eye Stress Naturally

How to Relieve Eye Stress Naturally

Eye stress affects a large majority of the population. After all, our eyes constantly are at work. Sometimes our eyes are strained to read fine print, look at a computer screen all day long, avoid bright sunlight, and adjust to harsh indoor lighting. This can lead to some rubbing of the eyes. Don't get carried away with worry. There are simple and natural remedies that will allow our precious peepers to take a rest. Yes, your eyes can rest even when it isn't bedtime.

1

Start with simple eye exercises to relieve eye strain. If you are focusing on your computer, try looking at a longer distance to work the different eye muscles. Focus again, but focus this time on something that is right in front of your face. Look near. Look far. Repeat this five times. Take a couple of long blinks, and repeat this once again.

2

Try a different distance exercise, and follow your finger. Hold your arm out in front of you, and extend your pointer finger (like the test at the eye doctor office.) This gives your eyes relief, and it strengthens the lenses and muscles at the same time.

3

Dim your lighting. Harsh indoor office or home lighting can cause eye strain. To relieve the strain off your eyes, dim your lights to a comfortable level. Doing this for only thirty minutes can make a difference.

4

Give yourself a two minute head massage. The scalp is reflexology paradise! Besides relieving stress all over your body, a simple two minute head (and scalp) massage can relieve eye strain and stress.

5

If all else fails, take a short cat nap. Ten to fifteen minutes of short rest on your eyes will leave you refreshed. You'll wake up ready to see the world in a stress-free light!

Tips & Warnings

Try a soft light bulb. The right lighting can make a difference!

Don't forget to give your eyes a break. If you stare at a computer screen for 8 to 10 hours a day, it is recommended that you rest your eyes every 10 minutes. It's not always easy, but it can be done.

How to Relieve Eye Redness and Irritation With Herbs

How to Relieve Eye Redness and Irritation With Herbs

My husband climbed Mount Rainier a few summers ago and came back down from the mountain with dramatically irritated eyes. He was upset because he took time off from work so we could vacation in Washington State after the climb. He thought for sure he had conjunctivitis, which would ruin our vacation.

"Don't worry," I said. I'll take care of it. He didn't quite believe me until he woke up the next morning. His redness and irritation was gone. I managed to stop the problem before it escalated into a bigger infection.

How did I do it? Read on to find out!

Things You'll Need:

Black tea bags

Chamomile tea

Wash cloths

1

I looked around our hotel room and found some black tea bags. I took two of them and rinsed them in the sink with some warm water. I placed them on his eyes and we let them sit.

2

While the black tea bags were resting on his eyes, I left to track down a grocery store. There, I found some chamomile tea bags. I took them back to the room and brewed up some chamomile tea and poured it into a dish.

3

I then dipped a wash cloth into the chamomile tea, removed the tea bags from his eye lids and replaced it with the chamomile compress. I let that sit for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, I ran the tea bags under warm water again and placed them on his eyes for another 10 minutes.

4

I alternated in this way for a good hour until he finally fell asleep with the tea bags on his eyes. When he woke up the next morning, the redness was gone.

5

Why did it work? Both chamomile and black tea are rich in what are known as "tannins," which help relieve inflammation. Chamomile also contains other ingredients that are extra soothing. If this didn't work, we would have gone to the doctor that morning so he could get proper medication.

Tips & Warnings

You can also do this if your eyes are irritated from things like allergies. It doesn't necessarily need to be an infection.

Make sure you see a doctor, especially if symptoms don't improve. Eye infections aren't something to take lightly.

How to Relieve Bronchial Asthma With Acupuncture

How to Relieve Bronchial Asthma With Acupuncture

Bronchial asthma is a pulmonary disorder that affects 15 million Americans each year. It is characterized by an obstruction and inflammation of the bronchial tubes that causes difficulty in breathing and wheezing. Bronchial asthma is usually triggered by an external stimulus such as an allergy, exertion or psychological stress.

1

Treat cold asthma primarily by sedation of the lung and elimination of the phlegm. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, asthma is primarily caused by persistent coughing in addition to fluid in the lungs and the retention of phlegm. The Qi passage is blocked, which impairs the functioning of the lungs and produces the symptoms of coughing, rattling and wheezing.

2

Use the following acupoints as the primary locations for the treatment of bronchial asthma with acupuncture: Chize LU 5, Feishu UB 13, Fengmen UB 12, Lieque LU 7 and Tanzhong REN 17.

3

Add Dazhui DU 14 and Shenzhu DU 12 for patients with body aches and headaches. Shangxing DU 23 and Yingxiang LI 20 may be added for a stuffy or runny nose.

4

Sedate the points and leave them in place for half an hour. Stimulate Renzhong REN 17 until the sensation of needling reaches the sides of the chest. Insert a needle into the Chize LU 5 acupoint in the direction opposite the flow of Qi.

5

Keep Feishu UB 13 and Fengmen UB 12 sedated for two minutes. These two points also should be cupped for best results.

Tips & Warnings

As with any type of medical treatment, seek a licensed professional.

How to Relieve Bed-Wetting With Acupuncture

How to Relieve Bed-Wetting With Acupuncture

Bed-wetting, also called enuresis, is an involuntary discharge of urine. It usually does not have an identifiable cause and a variety of treatments are available, ranging from behavioral options to medication. Acupuncture is occasionally used to treat enuresis and views it as a dysfunction of the bladder.

1

Consider the most important acupuncture points for enuresis to B23, B28, B32, Gv4, Gv15, Gv20, H7, H9, K3, K5, Sp4, Sp6, Sp12, St36, Ren2, Ren3 and Ren6. The specific points used are determined by the cause of the bed-wetting.

2

Clear away dampness-heat if it is being retained by the liver meridian by using the liver acupoints. This cause of enuresis is marked by scanty and odorous yellow urine.

3

Improve the flow of Qi and preserve fluids in the lungs and spleen with the liver and spleen acupoints. These patients will experience enuresis at night with scant urine during the day accompanied by a poor appetite, pale complexion, fatigue, thready pulse, pale tongue and loose stools.

4

Tonify the yin and clear away the heat for enuresis caused by asthenia-fire syndrome. These cases are marked by the frequent discharge of dark, scant urine accompanied by a hot feeling during urination.

5

Use the kidney acupoints to warm and strengthen the kidneys for cases of asthenia-cold syndrome. These cases are marked by frequent enuresis while asleep with frequent clear urination during the day. Additional symptoms include cold limbs with soreness and weakness in the back and knees.

How to Relieve Back Pain with Castor Oil

How to Relieve Back Pain with Castor Oil

If you suffer from regular or sporadic back pain, the simplest tasks in life can be torturous to do. Perhaps you have tried every new "quick fix remedy" that comes on the market, hoping this will finally relieve you from pain and misery. Well, here's a technique that combines the healing power of Castor oil to not only ease the pain, but also relieve the inner self of a lot of stress. Castor oil's medicinal use
dates
back to the ancient Egyptians, and is just as effective today.

Things You'll Need:

Washing machine

Clothes dryer

Large fluffy towel

1/8th cup of Castor oil

Peppermint essential oil

Woodlock essential oil

Citrus blend essential oil

Squeeze bottle

Large plastic bag or small kitchen trashbag

Heating pad

1

Moisten a towel by spinning it in your washer. A spin in the washer is the fastest, most effective way to distribute moisture evenly in your towel, rather than wetting it and wringing it out.

2

Place the moistened towel in your dryer to warm it up. The moist heat from the warm towel is necessary to make the process effective.

3

Add the essential oils to the castor oil, using no more than two or three drops of each essential oil that you select.

4

Gently warm the oils with by placing the mixture into a sink-full of hot water. The oil is ready when it is warm to the touch--but not too hot for your comfort. Pour it into a squeeze bottle.

5

Dribble the warmed oil mixture over the area that pains the most. Place the moistened, pre-warmed towel over the oil. Spread the plastic over the towel, and then the heating pad over the plastic. Set the heating pad at a low temperature. Leave this layered treatment on for 20 to 25 minutes, as you rest and relax.

Tips & Warnings

You can use a hot water bottle if you don't have a heating pad.

Castor oil must never be ingested, applied to broken skin or used during
pregnancy
or nursing.

Warming the oils in hot water ensures that the warmth is evenly distributed, which would not be the case if you used a microwave or stove--which would tend to overheat it anyway.
